Practical Tips

Everything you need to know before and during your visit

What currency does Paraguay use?

The Paraguayan Guaraní (PYG, symbol ₲). The exchange rate makes numbers large — 1 USD ≈ 7,500–8,000 ₲ in 2024. Do not panic when you see a bill for 500,000 ₲ — it is about $65 USD.

Can I use US dollars or Argentine pesos?

US dollars are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and markets in Asunción. Argentine pesos are also accepted in border areas and many Asunción businesses. Euros are less common but accepted in some places. Always confirm before assuming.

Where is the best place to exchange money?

Cambios (exchange houses) on Palma Street in the historic center offer excellent rates with no commission — generally better than airports or hotels. Bring USD cash for the best rates.

Are ATMs available?

Yes. Most major banks have ATMs. Banco Continental, BBVA, and Banco Regional are reliable. Be aware that ATM fees for foreign cards can be high. Withdrawing larger amounts reduces the fee impact.

Should I tip in Paraguay?

Tipping is appreciated but not expected in the same way as in the US. In restaurants, 10% is a generous tip and will be very appreciated. Street food and market vendors do not expect tips. Taxi drivers do not require tips but rounding up is kind.
